TRANSFER OF HEALTH CARE SKILLS FOR STABILITY

Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops deployed in Dhobley, Somalia, under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), today held the fourth graduation ceremony of the Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) Medical Mentorship Programme. This year’s programme saw 18 mentees successfully graduate after completing structured training and mentorship delivered by AUSSOM-KDF medical professionals.

The CIMIC Medical Mentorship Programme is an annual initiative designed to equip trainees from the local community and partner forces, including the Somalia Security Forces, with essential medical skills. Through hands-on training and knowledge sharing, the programme strengthens healthcare delivery within the community while enhancing medical response capabilities among partner security forces.

Graduates completed seven months of theoretical and practical training in key areas, including midwifery, peri-operative nursing, wound care, laboratory technology, nutrition, and combat medical support.

Speaking during the ceremony, KDF commanders at the Level II Hospital commended the graduates, noting that the skills acquired will have a lasting impact on community health. They emphasized that the graduates represent a vital step toward a stronger and more resilient healthcare system and expressed pride in equipping the trainees with skills that will directly improve lives by strengthening the capacity of Dhobley General Hospital and the Somalia Security Forces.

They further urged the graduates to apply their skills to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those they serve, while upholding high standards of healthcare in their communities.

On his part, Colonel Maurice Wasomi commended the mentees for their dedication and resilience, noting that their success strengthens both the hospital and the wider community. He also highlighted the importance of collaboration between AUSSOM-KDF, the mentees, and the Somalia Security Forces in building sustainable healthcare capacity.

“The presence of commanders underscores the strong cooperation between AUSSOM Forces and the Somalia Security Forces in building sustainable healthcare capacity, enhancing community resilience, and supporting local healthcare development,” added Col Wasomi.

The graduation marks another key milestone for AUSSOM-KDF in advancing community-focused capacity building. By investing in local skills and knowledge, the initiative continues to enhance access to quality healthcare while strengthening resilience across the region.
