The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, efficiency, and results-driven governance following a comprehensive briefing to the Parliamentary Committee on Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations. The session underscored the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to align strategic defence priorities with prudent resource management and measurable outcomes.
Chaired by Belgut Member of Parliament, Hon. Nelson Koech, the Committee engaged the Ministry in a detailed review of Budget Implementation Monitoring and the status of projects and programmes for the 2025/26 Financial Year. The forum provided a vital accountability platform, enabling legislators to assess progress, evaluate timelines, and identify areas requiring additional support to ensure successful delivery.
At the center of the discussions was the Ministry’s performance in executing priority initiatives aimed at enhancing national security infrastructure and operational readiness. The briefing highlighted key milestones achieved so far, alongside ongoing programmes designed to modernize capabilities and strengthen institutional effectiveness. Emphasis was placed on adherence to budgetary allocations, efficiency in implementation, and proactive measures to address emerging challenges that could impact project completion.
The session was led by Principal Secretary for Defence, Dr. Patrick Mariru, accompanied by Vice Chief of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant General John Omenda, and a delegation of senior civilian and military officials. Together, they reiterated the Ministry’s focus on strengthening oversight systems, improving project management practices, and ensuring value for money in all defence-related expenditures.
Members of the Committee commended the Ministry for the progress made and called for sustained collaboration to address existing gaps and accelerate implementation. They also emphasized the need for robust accountability frameworks to ensure that defence programmes remain responsive to Kenya’s dynamic security landscape.
