Competitive shooting remains a demanding test of precision, discipline, mental resilience and tactical decision-making—qualities that closely mirror the professional competencies required in military service. Beyond competition, marksmanship sport provides an avenue for sharpening focus, enhancing reaction time, reinforcing composure under pressure and promoting a culture of excellence among service personnel. Participation in such competitions also strengthens institutional reputation by showcasing professionalism, skill and preparedness on national and international sporting platforms.

The Defence Forces Rifle Association (DEFRA) pistol team recently delivered an impressive performance during the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) League IV competition held at the Jockey Club Shooting Range in Nairobi, reaffirming the Kenya Defence Forces’ tradition of excellence in competitive sport.

The competition brought together skilled shooters from various divisions in a challenging contest that tested participants’ ability to balance speed, accuracy and power under high-pressure conditions. Rising to the occasion, the DEFRA team demonstrated remarkable precision, discipline and resilience, securing an impressive seven trophies in a strong display of competitive excellence.

In the Production Division, Senior Private (Spte) Charles Ngara delivered an outstanding performance to claim a silver medal, while Sergeant Agatha Muchiri secured bronze and further distinguished herself by winning silver in the Ladies Handgun category.

The Open Division also saw DEFRA excel, with Corporal Irene Ndunda earning bronze before capping her performance with a gold medal victory in the Ladies Handgun category. Warrant Officer II Alice Njuguna added to the team’s success with a bronze medal in the same category, underscoring the depth of talent within the association.

In the Standard Division, Spte Willy Kinyala further boosted DEFRA’s medal haul by securing bronze, rounding off a successful outing for the team.

Beyond the medals and trophies, the team’s performance reflected the enduring values of discipline, dedication and resilience that define military professionalism. Their achievements demonstrated how competitive sport serves not only as a platform for athletic excellence but also as an extension of operational values such as focus, adaptability and composure under pressure.
