ENHANCING DEFENCE OVERSIGHT THROUGH STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS

The strong bilateral relations and enduring defence cooperation between Kenya and the Republic of South Africa were further reinforced during a benchmarking visit by a delegation from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to the South African Defence Inspectorate Division.

The delegation, led by the Director of the Directorate of Oversight, Compliance and Accountability (DOCA), Major General M I Iddi, undertook the visit with the aim of enhancing institutional capacity and operationalising DOCA’s oversight, compliance and accountability mandate within the KDF.

The engagement provided a strategic platform for the delegation to exchange best practices with their South African counterparts in areas of inspections, investigations, audits, discipline management, accountability systems and integrated oversight mechanisms. The discussions highlighted the importance of effective oversight structures in promoting professionalism, transparency and institutional efficiency within defence establishments.

Further deliberations focused on capacity building, monitoring and evaluation frameworks, whistleblower and non-adversarial complaint mechanisms, as well as measures geared towards enhancing operational readiness and command accountability. The interaction also underscored the critical role of oversight institutions in strengthening integrity, responsiveness and effective service delivery within military organisations.
