In operational environments far from home, moments of faith and shared religious observance remain a vital source of strength, resilience and spiritual renewal for deployed troops. Beyond religious significance, such commemorations reinforce unity, moral responsibility and the enduring values of sacrifice and service that sustain personnel undertaking demanding peace support and stabilization operations.
In this spirit, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) Sector II joined Muslims across the world in commemorating the annual Eid Ul-Adha celebrations, reaffirming their commitment to faith, duty and regional peace and security.
Commonly referred to as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” Eid Ul-Adha commemorates the obedience and devotion of Prophet Ibrahim, who demonstrated unwavering faith through his willingness to sacrifice his son in submission to Allah’s command. The occasion remains a significant period of prayer, reflection, charity and compassion within the Muslim community.
At Kismayo New Airport Main Operating Base, the celebrations were led by Commander AUSSOM Sector II, Brigadier Edward Banda, who urged troops to uphold the values of obedience, sacrifice and discipline in the execution of their mission mandate. Drawing lessons from the Holy Qur’an, Brigadier Banda emphasized the importance of steadfastness and vigilance in maintaining peace and security within the area of responsibility.
The spiritual message was further reinforced by Major (Imam) Henry Karakacha, who called upon troops to strengthen their relationship with Allah and uphold Islamic teachings centered on ethical conduct, discipline and integrity. He noted that such values remain essential in enhancing professionalism, unity and operational effectiveness within the mission area.
A similar celebration was held at Dhobley Main Operating Base under the leadership of Commander Dhobley, Colonel Morris Wasomi, where troops gathered for prayers and reflection. In his remarks, Colonel Wasomi attributed the prevailing peace and stability in the area to the sacrifice, dedication and professionalism demonstrated by AUSSOM-KDF troops in collaboration with local security partners.
He observed that the secure environment currently being enjoyed by the predominantly Muslim border communities had enabled residents to celebrate the holy occasion peacefully and freely, underscoring the direct link between security operations and community wellbeing.
“This holy occasion reminds us of sacrifice, compassion and unity. The peace being witnessed today is a result of the dedication and professionalism of our troops working together with local security partners to ensure residents celebrate freely and safely,” said Colonel Wasomi.
At Afmadhow Base, troops led by Major P. M. Andanje, jointly marked the celebrations alongside their Somali Security Forces (SSF) counterparts in a demonstration of solidarity and partnership. Maj Adanje encouraged troops to remain steadfast in faith and continue making sacrifices in support of the mission’s objectives.
The engagement further highlighted the growing cooperation between AUSSOM-KDF and Somali Security Forces in advancing regional stability and strengthening local security institutions. Speaking during the event, the SSF delegation led by Afmadhow District Commissioner Abdirahman Ali commended AUSSOM-KDF for its continued support to the Jubaland administration and its sustained mentorship and cooperation with Somali security agencies.
He noted that the enduring partnership between the forces continues to play a critical role in enhancing security, fostering trust and supporting long-term peace and stability efforts within Somalia.
The Eid Ul-Adha celebrations across Sector II ultimately served not only as a spiritual observance, but also as a reaffirmation of the shared values of sacrifice, unity, compassion and duty that continue to guide troops serving in complex operational environments in pursuit of lasting peace and security.
