SHAPING STRATEGIC LEADERS FOR COLLECTIVE SECURITY

Professional military education remains a critical investment in building the leadership, adaptability and collaborative skills required to safeguard national interests and strengthen regional stability, particularly as security challenges continue to evolve in complexity and scope, increasing the demand for military leaders capable of operating effectively across joint, multinational and strategic environments.

The Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC) reaffirmed its role in this endeavour through the graduation of officers of Senior Joint Command and Staff Course No. 41/2025–26 during a ceremony held in Karen on 4 June 2026. The event marked the culmination of an intensive programme designed to prepare officers for higher command and staff responsibilities within modern military organizations.

Presiding over the ceremony was the Principal Secretary for Defence, Dr. Patrick Mariru, accompanied by the Vice Chief of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant General John Omenda. The occasion was also attended by Commander Kenya Army, Lt Gen David Keter, Commander Kenya Air Force, Maj Gen Bernard Waliaula, Commander Kenya Navy, Maj General Paul Otieno, alongside senior military officers, diplomats, faculty members, families and friends.

Addressing the graduates, Commandant JCSC, Major General Eric Kinuthia, described the occasion as a significant milestone in the officers’ professional journey. He emphasized that the College continues to play a pivotal role in developing leaders equipped to navigate contemporary security challenges and provide effective leadership at operational and strategic levels.

Major General Kinuthia noted that the Senior Joint Command and Staff Course remains the College’s flagship programme, specifically tailored to prepare Majors and newly promoted Lieutenant Colonels for appointments that demand strategic thinking, joint planning and operational leadership. He added that the course fosters interoperability, jointness and a common understanding of emerging security dynamics, enabling officers to operate effectively in increasingly complex environments.

A defining feature of the programme is its multinational character, which provides participants with opportunities to exchange experiences, broaden perspectives and strengthen professional networks. The graduating cohort comprised 95 officers from 16 countries, underscoring the College’s growing contribution to regional defence cooperation and its reputation as a centre of excellence in professional military education.

As a College of the National Defence University–Kenya, JCSC integrates professional military training with academic studies, ensuring that graduates develop both the intellectual and practical competencies required for modern military leadership. This approach enhances critical thinking, strategic analysis and decision-making skills necessary for addressing contemporary and future security challenges.

In his keynote address, Dr. Patrick Mariru congratulated the graduates on successfully completing the demanding programme and challenged them to apply the knowledge, leadership skills and professional values acquired throughout the course to strengthen service delivery within their respective institutions. He emphasized that continuous learning and professional development remain indispensable attributes of effective military leadership.

The ceremony also recognized excellence through the presentation of certificates and awards to outstanding performers in academic and leadership categories. The achievements celebrated not only individual merit but also the dedication, discipline and commitment demonstrated by the graduates throughout their training.

As the officers transition into positions of greater responsibility, the successful completion of Senior Joint Command and Staff Course No. 41/2025–26 highlights the enduring importance of professional military education in cultivating strategic leaders, enhancing interoperability and strengthening regional and international partnerships. Through such programmes, JCSC continues to contribute to the development of capable leaders prepared to advance peace, security and stability in their respective nations and beyond.
