WOMEN EMPOWERMENT IN DHOBLEY, SOMALIA

Community engagement and women-focused outreach programmes play a vital role in Peace Support Operations by fostering trust, strengthening cooperation, and promoting mutual understanding between mission personnel and local communities. Through initiatives that empower women, provide essential services, and encourage dialogue, peace support forces help address social and humanitarian challenges while creating an environment conducive to long-term stability and development.

In furthering this initiative, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), today, paid a visit to the Dhobley Women’s Group in Dhobley town, Jubaland State of Somalia, as part of an ongoing Female Soldiers Empowerment Program aimed at strengthening bonds between mission forces and local communities.

The delegation was warmly received by the group’s Chairlady, Fatma Yusuf, who briefed the visiting troops on the organization’s programs, highlighting the group’s efforts to uplift women in the Dhobley community through economic and social initiatives.

As part of the visit, AUSSOM-KDF troops established a medical camp that provided healthcare services to members of the women’s group and residents in the area, demonstrating the mission’s commitment to addressing the humanitarian needs of locals.

Speaking during the visit, the Exercise Commander Major Juliet Yegon expressed the mission’s dedication to inclusive community engagement.

“This program is close to our hearts. As soldiers, our duty goes beyond security it extends to the people we protect. Today we stand with the women of Dhobley not just as peace support troops, but as partners in building a better Somalia. We are inspired by the resilience and strength of this community.” She noted.

The engagement also featured a vibrant cultural exchange, as members of the Dhobley Women’s Group and female troops shared in traditional dances, a moment that strengthened solidarity and mutual respect between AUSSOM forces and the communities they serve.

“We are deeply grateful for this visit. The presence of these women in uniform gives our members hope and courage. They show us that women can serve, lead, and protect. That is a powerful message for our daughters and our community. The food and medical support they have brought us today will make a significant difference in households.” Chairlady Fatma Yusuf expressed her gratitude on behalf of the group.

The Program aim to continuously serve as a bridge between AUSSOM and Somali women, creating spaces for dialogue, support, and shared purpose in the broader effort to build a peaceful and stable Somalia.
