HARNESSING SPORTS TO STRENGTHEN PEACE AND SOCIAL COHESION

Sport has long served as a universal language that transcends social, cultural and institutional boundaries. Beyond competition, it creates opportunities for dialogue, mutual respect and shared experiences that strengthen trust among individuals and communities. In areas where security agencies and local populations work side by side, sporting activities provide a powerful platform for building relationships, nurturing understanding and reinforcing the values that underpin lasting peace.

Within Operation Maliza Uhalifu (OMU), sports have become an important avenue for fostering positive engagement between security personnel and surrounding communities. Friendly competitions encourage interaction in an atmosphere defined not by operational responsibilities but by teamwork, discipline and healthy rivalry.

This spirit was evident when the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) played a friendly football match against North Rift Vocational Technical Training College. The fixture attracted enthusiastic spectators and offered players from both teams an opportunity to build friendships while demonstrating teamwork, resilience and fair play.

The closely contested encounter produced moments of excitement and determination from both sides before ending in a 2-2 draw, with each team displaying impressive technical ability, discipline and commitment throughout the match.

Presiding over the event, Colonel Ambrose Mwabili commended the players for their exemplary conduct, noting that the discipline and respect demonstrated on the field reflected the true essence of sport.

He observed that while competition inspires excellence, the greatest achievement lies in the values cultivated through participation, including mutual respect, integrity, teamwork and unity.

Colonel Mwabili further emphasized that sports remain one of the most effective instruments for promoting peaceful coexistence, strengthening community bonds and creating meaningful opportunities for positive youth engagement. He encouraged participants to continue embracing sporting activities as a pathway to healthy competition, lasting friendships and stronger community relations.

The event reaffirmed Operation Maliza Uhalifu’s commitment to complementing its security mandate with community-centred initiatives that promote trust, inclusion and social cohesion. By bringing people together through sport, KDF continues to demonstrate that enduring peace is built not only through security operations but also through shared experiences that unite communities around common values and aspirations.
