Strong defence partnerships are built not only through joint operations and security cooperation, but also through sustained professional engagement between military institutions. By sharing knowledge, exchanging best practices and exposing officers to diverse training environments, defence establishments strengthen institutional capacity, deepen mutual trust and develop the collective expertise needed to address evolving regional and global security challenges.
This enduring value of military diplomacy was demonstrated when the Kenya Military Academy (KMA) hosted members of the Defence Attaché Association of Kenya (DAAK) during a familiarisation visit aimed at strengthening defence cooperation and exploring opportunities for collaboration in professional military education.
The delegation was led by the Dean of the Defence Attaché Association of Kenya, Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Kaulback, Deputy Defence Attaché of the United Kingdom. The visit formed part of the Association’s wider tour of Kenya Defence Forces institutions in the Nakuru region, which also included the National Defence University–Kenya and the Kenya Ordnance Factories Corporation.
During the engagement, the visiting delegation received a comprehensive briefing on the Academy’s history, mandate and officer training programmes before touring key academic, training and support facilities. The visit also created an opportunity for meaningful discussions on expanding cooperation in officer development, instructor exchange programmes, professional military education and institutional capacity building.
Welcoming the delegation, the Commandant of the Kenya Military Academy, Major General Joel Muriungi, underscored the importance of international military partnerships in advancing professionalism, institutional excellence and the exchange of knowledge among defence institutions. He observed that sustained collaboration enables military academies to learn from one another while preparing officers to operate effectively within increasingly complex and multinational security environments.
Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Kaulback expressed appreciation for the warm reception accorded to the delegation and commended the Academy for its outstanding contribution to developing competent, disciplined and professional military officers. He reaffirmed the value of continued engagement between partner defence institutions, noting that such exchanges strengthen understanding, build confidence and create lasting relationships that benefit participating nations.
The familiarisation visit also highlighted the growing role of professional military education as a cornerstone of defence diplomacy. Beyond producing capable military leaders, institutions such as the Kenya Military Academy provide platforms where international partnerships are transformed into practical cooperation through academic engagement, professional dialogue and the exchange of military expertise.
As Kenya continues to strengthen its defence relationships with partner nations, engagements of this nature reinforce the Kenya Defence Forces’ commitment to advancing military diplomacy, enhancing professional military education and expanding collaborative initiatives that contribute to shared security objectives, regional stability and lasting global peace.
