DEFABA ASSERTS BOXING SUPREMACY IN MOMBASA

Dominance in competitive sport is built through discipline, resilience and the relentless pursuit of excellence. For military athletes, these attributes mirror the warrior ethos, where physical conditioning, mental toughness and tactical precision combine to deliver success under pressure.

The Defence Forces Amateur Boxing Association (DEFABA) reinforced its growing stature in Kenyan boxing after topping both the men’s and women’s standings during the second leg of the 2026 National Boxing League, held from 9 to 11 July 2026 at Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mombasa.

Across three days of intense competition, the military pugilists delivered commanding performances, with the men’s team amassing 27 points while the women’s team secured eight points. The results demonstrated DEFABA’s depth, technical mastery and determination to set the pace in the national league.

The second leg attracted 18 teams from across the country, featuring 86 male and 16 female boxers. DEFABA fielded a 16-member squad comprising 13 men and three women, who entered the competition seeking to break away from Team Police after the two sides shared points during the opening leg.

From the first bell, DEFABA boxers imposed themselves on the competition, with 15 pugilists advancing to the semi-finals. The momentum intensified in the penultimate stage as 10 men and all three women fought their way into the finals, placing the military team in a strong position to dominate the standings.

Among the standout performances was super heavyweight Geoffrey Ayako, who stunned reigning national champion Clinton Macharia of Team Police in a major upset. In the light welterweight category, Lance Corporal Pius Macharia produced a commanding display to overcome Aloise Vincent of Team Prisons in a fiercely contested bout.

When the final bell sounded in Mombasa, DEFABA’s men’s team had opened a commanding lead with 27 points, 11 ahead of Team Police, who finished the leg with 16 points. The DEFABA women’s team equally stamped its authority on the competition, winning the second leg with eight points.

The Mombasa triumph propelled DEFABA to the top of the overall National Boxing League standings with 49 points, ahead of Team Police on 38 points. The performance strengthens the team’s position in the title race and highlights the Kenya Defence Forces’ continued investment in nurturing sporting talent and promoting excellence in competitive sport.

With the third leg scheduled for August 2026 in Vihiga, DEFABA now turns its attention to sustaining the momentum, sharpening its competitive edge and building on the gains achieved in Mombasa as the battle for national boxing honours intensifies.
