Strengthening Non Commissioned Officer (NCO) leadership remains central to building agile, disciplined, and professional defence forces capable of responding to an increasingly complex security environment. As modern military operations continue to evolve, investment in the education, mentorship, and development of NCOs has become a defining element of institutional effectiveness and operational readiness.
This shared focus shaped a meeting between the Defence Forces Sergeant Major (DFSM), Warrant Officer Class One (WO1) Bwana Haji Omari, and the United States Africa Command (USAFRICOM) Command Senior Enlisted Leader (CSEL), Command Sergeant Major Garric M. Banfield, held at Defence Headquarters.
The engagement underscored the enduring military partnership between the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and USAFRICOM, with discussions concentrating on professional military education, NCO leadership development, and institutional capacity building. Both leaders examined practical avenues for expanding cooperation in developing the planned KDF NCO Academy through mentorship programmes, specialized training, and the exchange of best practices.
The envisioned academy is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping a professional, resilient, and mission-ready NCO Corps equipped with the leadership skills and technical competencies required to address emerging security challenges. Strengthening the professional foundation of NCOs will further enhance command effectiveness, operational cohesion, and mission success across the Defence Forces.
The discussions also reaffirmed the indispensable role of non-commissioned officers as the backbone of effective military organizations. By nurturing ethical leadership, discipline, and technical proficiency at every level, armed forces are better positioned to sustain operational excellence while adapting to evolving regional and global security dynamics.
Regional cooperation featured prominently during the meeting, with the two leaders reviewing preparations for the upcoming East Africa Senior Enlisted Leaders (EASEL) Engagement scheduled to take place in Gabon later this year. The forum will convene senior enlisted leaders from across East Africa and partner nations to strengthen professional networks, exchange experiences, and advance interoperability among participating militaries.
The engagement highlighted the continued evolution of the Kenya Defence Forces–USAFRICOM partnership, demonstrating a shared investment in developing competent, ethical, and capable enlisted leaders who will strengthen institutional resilience while contributing to regional peace, security, and stability.
