Golf is more than a competitive sport. It demands discipline, concentration, resilience and strategic thinking while providing a valuable platform for networking, camaraderie and strengthening relationships within the Defence Forces and beyond.
The 6th Edition of the Commander Kenya Air Force (KAF) Golf Tournament was held at the Great Rift Valley Lodge and Golf Resort on Saturday, 26 September 2026, bringing together 280 golfers from across the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the wider golfing fraternity, including serving and retired officers, sponsors and partners.
The tournament, part of the broader KDF golfing calendar, has grown from a modest initiative into an established sporting fixture that promotes excellence, strengthens professional networks and fosters esprit de corps among participants.
Competition was keen across the various categories, with Major David Wema emerging as the Kenya Defence Forces Golf Association (KDFGA) Overall Winner after posting 38 points.
Major Elvis Murunga won the KDFGA Division A category with 33 points, while Corporal Alan Barasa claimed the Division B title with 34 points. Christine Mwirigi emerged as the KDFGA Ladies’ Winner with 33 points.
Brigadier (Rtd) Willy Wesonga secured the Veteran Winner category with 35 points, while Senior Sergeant Harun Wanyama and Senior Sergeant Grace Kwamboka took the Longest Drive honours in the Men’s and Ladies’ categories respectively.
Speaking during the event, Commander KAF, Major General Bernard Waliaula, welcomed the participants and commended the organisers for once again bringing together the KDF golfing community in an atmosphere of friendship, competition and sportsmanship.
Reflecting on the character of the game and the lessons it offers beyond the golf course, Maj Gen Waliaula observed that golf continually challenges players to remain focused and humble.
“Golf has a wonderful way of keeping us humble. One good shot convinces you that you have mastered the game; the very next one reminds you that you have not,” he said.
The Commander KAF commended the KDFGA, under the leadership of its Patron, Major General Erick Kinuthia, for its continued efforts to promote golf among Defence Forces personnel under the Defence Forces Sports Control Board.
Maj Gen Waliaula also thanked the tournament’s sponsors and partners for their support, noting that their contribution was instrumental in the successful staging of the event.
Congratulating the winners, he encouraged those who did not secure prizes to value the friendships, experiences and lessons gained during the tournament.
“In golf, as in life, every round provides another opportunity to improve,” he said.
Beyond the scores and individual honours, the tournament provided an opportunity for serving and retired KDF personnel, partners and members of the wider golfing fraternity to interact, strengthen professional relationships and renew longstanding friendships.
The 6th Commander KAF Golf Tournament ultimately demonstrated the wider value of sport within the Defence Forces — promoting physical well-being, discipline, teamwork and cohesion while strengthening the bonds that sustain the spirit of service.
