Access to quality healthcare is essential to community resilience, public well-being and sustainable peace. In Somalia, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) continue to advance civil-military cooperation through engagement with local healthcare institutions.
As part of Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) and Key Leader Engagement initiatives, KDF troops visited Afmadow General Hospital, where they held discussions with the hospital management to assess healthcare delivery, identify operational challenges and explore opportunities for collaboration.
The Level I hospital serves residents of Afmadow District and patients referred from neighbouring districts. Supported by the Government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), the facility is preparing to relocate to larger premises currently under construction, with completion anticipated by December 2026.
The new facility is expected to expand healthcare capacity, improve service delivery and enhance access to essential medical services for the surrounding communities.
The engagement provided a platform for identifying priority healthcare needs, fostering institutional cooperation and exploring practical interventions to support community welfare.
Through sustained CIMIC initiatives and engagement with local institutions, KDF troops continue to build community trust, promote civil-military relations and contribute to humanitarian efforts that complement AUSSOM’s broader mandate of advancing peace and stability in Somalia.
