ALMASI: A PREVENTIVE APPROACH TO ORAL HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE

Oral health education and preventive care remain vital to sustaining the health and operational readiness of military personnel. The Kenya Defence Forces ( KDF) Dental Team, from the Directorate of Medical Services (DMS), joined the Section for Defence Forces Dental Services (SDFDS) at the Annual World Dental Congress (FDI), held in Prague, Czech Republic.

Col (Dr) Mildred Mavindu, Col (Dr) Jethro Wambugu, Capt (Dr) Cliffland Mosoti and Capt (Dr) Eucabeth Kidenda delivered an oral presentation on a programme, known as ALMASI.

ALMASI was developed and implemented during the first contingent of the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM I), providing a structured approach to oral health promotion and disease prevention among deployed personnel. The strategy spans interventions from the pre-deployment phase through to in-theatre activities, with emphasis on education, prevention, and early management of oral health conditions.

The presentation provided an opportunity to share the programme’s approach and lessons with an international audience of dental professionals and researchers.

The participation of KDF officers in the Defence Section highlighted the contribution of military dental services to preventive healthcare and operational readiness, while providing a platform for exchanging experiences and best practices drawn from deployed environments.
