Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and deployed at Kismayo joined the United Nations (UN) in marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence. The day featured a 1.2-kilometer race for women and a 2.4-kilometer race for men.
The event was held in solidarity with persons living with disabilities and to champion equal participation. Its message centered on ensuring that every individual, regardless of physical, sensory, or cognitive ability, has the opportunity to live, work, and serve with respect and without barriers. It also served as a meaningful way to observe the annual global campaign to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls.
In a lively show of unity, staff from the UN office in Kismayo, the KDF, and the Sierra Leone Formed Police Unit (SLFPU) took part in the races. KDF personel dominated both categories, taking all top three positions. In the men’s race, L/Cpl Dennis Kemboi won, clocking a time of 14 minutes 37 seconds. In the women’s race, Spte Sarah Wasike finished first in 9 minutes 25 seconds.
The occasion was presided over by Col Samson Kenga, representing the Sector Commander. Col Kenga congratulated the participants and reaffirmed the KDF’s commitment to supporting efforts to eliminate all forms of violence against women, girls, men, and boys, as well as promoting the inclusion of persons with disabilities.
“KDF has adopted policies that support people abled differently and is fully committed to ensuring they are included and respected in the society. We also stand behind all efforts aimed at ending gender-based violence,” he said.
The UN coordinator during the event, Christian Coker, commended all participants for their spirited show of talent. He noted that such initiatives strengthen cooperation among partners in Kismayo and help reinforce the shared commitment to protecting vulnerable groups and promoting dignity for all.
Also present during the event were Col Stanley Magiri, OF KDF, Officers, UN staff and Service Members.
