Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), having been formally invited by the AUSSOM–Sierra Leone Formed Police Unit (SLFPU VI), participated in an inter-contingent athletics competition organized by SLFPU VI at the Kismayo New Airport Main Operating Base as part of the Christmas festivities.
The event was presided over by the Commander AUSSOM Sector II, Brig Edward Banda. Troops from the two contingents competed in various track and field events that tested endurance, teamwork, and physical fitness. The competition provided an opportunity for personnel to unwind from operational duties while strengthening cooperation and camaraderie among the contingents.
The Kenya Defence Forces produced a stellar performance, dominating in both male and female categories in the 200m, 400m, 800m, as well as the 4x400m and 4x400m mixed relay events. The highlight of the competition came in the men’s 800m, where Cpl Vincent Musyoki cruised to victory in 2:48.29. In the “Tag of Peace” competitions, the female category saw the SLFPU VI team outshine their KDF counterparts with a 2–1 victory. The male category, however, saw KDF secure a tactical win over SLFPU VI, rounding off an exciting and competitive athletics event.
In his address, the SLFPU VI Commander, Superintendent Ibrahim Samura, thanked the KDF for their participation and support, noting that joint activities of this nature play an important role in boosting friendship among personnel. He observed that sporting engagements provide a relaxed environment for interaction, which in turn strengthens the bond, mutual trust, and teamwork between the two partner contingents.
Brig Banda commended the participants for their discipline and sportsmanship, noting that such activities promote unity and morale within the mission. He encouraged continued engagement in sporting events as a way of fostering teamwork and maintaining physical readiness. He also reminded the troops to maintain utmost alertness, especially during the festive season, and to remain steadfast in achieving the mission mandate.
The day’s events culminated in a rigorous warrior competition conducted by SLFPU VI, during which professional skills- including soldier readiness, weapon assembly/disassembly, and weapon handling proficiency were thoroughly assessed, demonstrating the operational capability and tactical competence of the participating soldiers.
