AUSSOM SECTOR II TROOPS COMMEMORATE EID AL-ADHA

On 6 June 2025, Col Gideon Bebora, on behalf of the Commander African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM)  Sector II, Brig Edward Banda, led muslim faithfuls in Eid al-Adha celebrations at New Airport Main Operating Base.

In his address, Col Bebora thanked the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Muslim fraternity for their generous invitation to celebrate together. He also expressed gratitude to the Jubaland Security leadership for honouring the occasion with their presence.

Drawing comparison from the the Qur’an, the Deputy Commander urged congregants to uphold obedience- just as Prophet Ibrahim was obedient to Allah’s command to sacrifice his son, Ishmael,  and as Ishmael was obedient to his father. He further laid emphasis on troops to stay vigilant in ongoing operations, as threats remain unpredictable.

The Commanding Officer (CO), Lt Col  Galgalo Liban encouraged deeper brotherhood among troops and greater collaboration with other troop-contributing countries for mission success. He pointed on patience, resilience and justice as virtues relevant for sustainable progress in the society and to military fraternity.

Elsewhere in Dhobley Main Operating Base Commander Dhobley Col Maurice Wasomi, in company of the Commanding Officer (CO)- Lt Col Samson Kenga, led Eid al-Adha commemorations. Col Wasomi urged troops to maintain strong family ties and nurture bonds that endure beyond the battlefield. He also called on them to observe vigilance during the celebrations and the need for security consciousness even in moments of festivity.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” is one of the most significant Islamic holidays. It commemorates the willingness of Prophet (Ibrahim) Abraham to sacrifice his son (Ishmael) Ismail as an act of obedience to God. However, God provided a ram to sacrifice instead, symbolizing divine mercy and compassion.

Eid al-Adha coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage, which is one of the five pillars of Islam and involves a series of rituals performed in Mecca. The holiday is marked by several important rituals and traditions, including special prayers, animal sacrifices, charitable acts, and reflections on faith and obedience.
