BUILDING DIGITAL RESILIENCE FOR THE MODERN SOLDIER

BUILDING DIGITAL RESILIENCE FOR THE MODERN SOLDIER

In an increasingly interconnected world, the information environment has emerged as a critical domain of national security. The rapid growth of digital technologies, social media platforms and artificial intelligence has transformed how information is created, shared and consumed, presenting both opportunities and risks for military organizations. Consequently, digital awareness and media literacy have become essential competencies for military personnel, enabling them to protect sensitive information, safeguard operational security and uphold the professional standards expected of members of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

Recognizing the importance of these skills, recruits at the Defence Forces Recruits Training School (DFRTS), Eldoret, participated in a three-day sensitisation programme on digital awareness and media literacy conducted by Strategic Communication personnel from 2 to 4 June 2026.

The programme was designed to equip recruits with the knowledge and practical understanding required to navigate the contemporary information environment responsibly and effectively. Through a series of interactive sessions, participants gained valuable insights into the evolving media landscape and the role of media in shaping public discourse, perception and national narratives.

Key topics covered included emerging social and digital media platforms, the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence in communication, and the legal and policy frameworks governing social media use within the Kenya Defence Forces. The sessions provided recruits with a broader appreciation of how technological advancements continue to reshape the modern information ecosystem and influence security dynamics.

Particular emphasis was placed on responsible social media engagement, information management and operational security. Recruits were sensitised on the potential risks associated with inappropriate online behaviour, including the inadvertent disclosure of sensitive information that could compromise military operations, personal security or institutional credibility.

The training further highlighted the importance of discipline, professionalism and ethical conduct in the digital space, reinforcing the principle that the actions of individual service members online can have broader implications for organizational reputation and national security.

The sensitisation programme forms part of a wider KDF initiative aimed at developing professionally competent, informed and adaptable soldiers capable of operating effectively in a rapidly evolving technological environment. By investing in digital awareness and media literacy, the Kenya Defence Forces continues to strengthen its human capital while building a force that is operationally ready, information-conscious and resilient against emerging challenges in the modern information domain.

As warfare and security increasingly extend into the digital sphere, cultivating digitally literate soldiers remains essential to maintaining operational effectiveness, protecting institutional interests and supporting the successful execution of KDF’s mandate in defence of the nation.
