CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

As military operations become increasingly shaped by data, automation, and emerging technologies, the ability to harness Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming a strategic imperative for modern defence forces. Building a technologically competent workforce capable of understanding and applying AI is therefore essential to maintaining operational effectiveness, enhancing decision-making, and preparing for future security challenges.

In line with this evolving reality, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) marked a significant milestone in its modernization agenda with the successful completion of the Service Members Basic Artificial Intelligence Course 01/26. The course culminated in a closing ceremony presided over by Brigadier Joel Kirimi from Defence Headquarters at the National Military Command Centre (NMCC) in Karen, Nairobi.

Delivered through the Defence Intelligence Academy (DIA) with support from guest instructors drawn from Action Lab under the Office of the Special Envoy on Technology, the programme provided foundational training in Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies. The participants were equipped with critical knowledge and practical skills necessary to operate effectively within an increasingly technology-driven security environment.

The training underscores KDF’s commitment to developing a future-ready force that embraces innovation as a key enabler of operational excellence. As defence and security environments become more complex and data-centric, the ability to understand, apply, and responsibly manage emerging technologies is becoming an indispensable competency for military professionals.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony, Brigadier Kirimi commended the participants for their dedication and commitment throughout the course. He encouraged them to leverage their newly acquired knowledge to enhance the operational capabilities of the Kenya Defence Forces and contribute to the institution’s ongoing transformation.

“The future of national defence will be shaped by those who can think, adapt, and innovate. This course is a foundation; the responsibility now lies with each of you to apply these skills in service of our nation,” he stated.

The initiative reflects KDF’s broader vision of cultivating a technologically empowered force capable of leveraging innovation to address contemporary and emerging security challenges. By investing in human capital and digital competencies, the Kenya Defence Forces, through the Moran AI and Cyber Centre of Excellence, continues to strengthen its position as a regional leader in military innovation while fostering sustainable technological capacity and collaboration among African partner nations.

As the digital revolution continues to redefine the defence landscape, programmes such as the Basic Artificial Intelligence Course are laying the foundation for a new generation of military professionals equipped to operate, innovate, and lead in the information age.
