The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) continues to preserve the proud traditions of its airborne forces by honouring the courage, sacrifice and exceptional service of the elite men and women who have shaped Kenya’s military history from the skies. Airborne Day remains a defining occasion that celebrates the resilience, professionalism and fighting spirit of paratroopers while paying tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the nation.
Held under the theme “Their Courage. Our Legacy.”, this year’s Airborne Day Commemoration was observed across all airborne units of the KDF, bringing together serving and retired personnel in recognition of a shared heritage built on courage, discipline and unwavering devotion to duty.
The commemorative events featured a colourful military parade, the laying of wreaths at the memorial monument, sporting activities and moments of reflection that highlighted the rich history and distinguished achievements of Kenya’s airborne forces. The occasion provided an opportunity for generations of airborne soldiers to honour fallen comrades, celebrate their collective identity and reaffirm their readiness to defend Kenya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity whenever called upon.
At Kenyatta Barracks in Gilgil, Nakuru County, the Chief Guest, Brigadier (Rtd) Dickson Ruto, challenged serving soldiers to remain true to the values that define the Special Forces.
He urged them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, courage and selfless service while remaining steadfast in preserving the enduring ideals and traditions that have earned Kenya’s airborne forces their distinguished reputation.
During the ceremony, the Deputy Commander Army Special Operations Brigade (ASOB), Colonel David Munoru, described Airborne Day as a solemn occasion dedicated to remembering the courage, resilience and selfless service that characterise Kenya’s airborne soldiers.
He commended serving personnel for their steadfast commitment to duty, honoured the memory of the fallen heroes who laid down their lives in defence of the nation and encouraged all airborne troops to safeguard the proud traditions, core values and esprit de corps that continue to inspire successive generations of paratroopers.
The spirit of the commemoration extended beyond Kenya’s borders as personnel of Kenya’s 5th Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF 5), deployed under the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), also marked Airborne Day at Mavivi Permanent Operating Base. Led by Lieutenant Colonel Celestine Papa, the contingent observed the occasion in solidarity with fellow airborne units back home, demonstrating that the bonds of the airborne fraternity remain unbroken regardless of operational theatre.
Airborne Day continues to embody the values that define Kenya’s elite paratroopers—courage under pressure, unwavering commitment to mission success, and selfless service to the nation. By preserving the legacy of those who came before them and celebrating the achievements of today’s airborne soldiers, the annual commemoration strengthens institutional pride, reinforces operational excellence and inspires future generations entrusted with defending Kenya’s sovereignty, protecting its people and securing the nation’s future.
