COMMANDER KENYA NAVY ATTENDS COMBINED NAVAL EVENT

Commander Kenya Navy Major General Paul Otieno joined world naval leaders, industry professionals and academicians at the Combined Naval Event (CNE) that took place from 20-22 May 2025 in Farnborough, United Kingdom.

The CNE is a premier international forum for discussions on naval capabilities, technologies and strategies in maritime security. The discussions cantered on the future of surface fleets, underwater defence and security and innovations in surface and submarine technologies.

During the exhibitions at the event, Major General Otieno explored future surface fleet technologies from lead maritime companies like Thales, Leonardo and BAE.

As a prelude to the event, Major General Otieno engaged with Commodore Tim Green, Commander of Naval Forces London and East England region, and Commodore Andrew Ainsley, the Deputy Commander of United Kingdom Strike Force. The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in shared areas of interest. He also paid a courtesy call on Her Excellency Catherine Karemu, the Kenyan High Commissioner to the United Kingdom who is also an accredited delegate to International Maritime Organization (IMO), a Global authority on maritime & shipping affairs.

Further, Major General Otieno visited the Joint Maritime Security Centre and Her Majesty’s Ship (HMS) Mersey in Portsmouth. The visit provided an opportunity to showcase joint maritime capabilities and highlight the Offshore Patrol Vessel’s (OPV) multirole functionality, with particular focus on integrated technologies such as Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS).

The Commander Kenya Navy was accompanied by the Chief of Naval Medical Services at Kenya Navy Headquarters Brigadier (Dr) Justino Muinde, Defence Advisor of Kenya to the United Kingdom Colonel Abdirizak Dagane and GM Commercial services at Kenya Shipyards Limited Lieutenant Colonel Gavin Kasyoka.
