COMPETITIVE KICK BOXING SHARPENS ELITE TALENT AND ENHANCES SPORTING EXCELLENCE

Sport remains an integral component of military training, developing the physical fitness, discipline, resilience and mental fortitude required for operational effectiveness. Beyond supporting mission readiness, competitive sport provides an avenue for identifying and nurturing elite athletes capable of representing Kenya with distinction on regional and international platforms. Through sustained investment in sporting excellence, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) continues to strengthen military professionalism while contributing to the country’s growing success in international sport.

It is for this reason that the Kenya Defence Forces Ulinzi Kick Boxing Team hosted the 7th Edition of the Kenya Kick Boxing Federation (KKF) Open Championship 2026 at the Kahawa Garrison Gymnasium in Nairobi. Organised by the Kenya Kick Boxing Federation, the championship brought together men’s and women’s teams from across the country in a highly competitive tournament aimed at identifying outstanding athletes for Kenya’s national team ahead of upcoming international competitions.

The championship attracted leading clubs, including One Tribe, Lenixx, Dragon, Nakuru Team, and several others, highlighting the expanding depth and competitiveness of kick boxing in Kenya. The Ulinzi team fielded nine athletes led by Corporal Linus Otieno, a silver medalist at the 2nd African Military Games, whose leadership and experience added strength to the military side’s campaign.

Beyond determining championship honours, the tournament served as the first phase of selecting Kenya’s national kick boxing team. Four athletes earned places in the provisional national squad, with Corporal Linus Otieno of Ulinzi and Peter Njuguna of One Tribe selected in the men’s category, while Susan Oduor of Ulinzi and Juliet Wambui of Dragon secured selection in the women’s category. The final selection phase is scheduled to take place during the Rift Valley Open Championship in Nakuru.

Speaking during the event, Ulinzi Team leaders commended the athletes for their steady progress, noting that consistent participation in competitive championships continues to sharpen technical skills, strengthen confidence and enhance overall performance. They observed that regular exposure to quality competition enables athletes to refine their abilities while cultivating the discipline and resilience required to excel at the highest level.

The team leadership reaffirmed its commitment to developing technically proficient, disciplined and competitive athletes capable of delivering success both nationally and internationally. They noted that sustained training, teamwork and dedication have continued to yield positive results and expressed confidence that the team will build on its current momentum.

The Ulinzi Kick Boxing Team’s upward trajectory has been reinforced through strong performances in major competitions, including the 2nd African Military Games held in Abuja, Nigeria, in November 2024, where the team secured one gold and two silver medals. These achievements continue to demonstrate the value of structured training, competitive exposure and institutional support in producing elite athletes who proudly represent both the Kenya Defence Forces and the nation.

The championship underscored the Kenya Defence Forces’ enduring commitment to developing sporting excellence as a pillar of military professionalism. By providing athletes with opportunities to compete at the highest level while creating pathways to national representation, KDF continues to cultivate talent that inspires national pride, enhances operational readiness and strengthens Kenya’s presence on the international sporting stage.
