Access to quality healthcare remains a fundamental pillar of the Kenya Defence Forces’ commitment to the welfare of its personnel beyond active service. Through strategic healthcare initiatives, KDF continues to promote preventive medical care, improve access to essential medical services and enhance the quality of life for retired personnel, veterans, beneficiaries and serving members transitioning into retirement.
The Kenya Defence Forces, through the Defence Forces Medical Insurance Scheme (DEFMIS), conducted a one-day medical camp at the Eldoret ASK Showground to sensitize beneficiaries on the comprehensive medical services and benefits available under the Scheme.
Addressing participants, the Managing Director of the Defence Forces Medical Insurance Scheme (DEFMIS), Brigadier Hussein Amin, emphasized the importance of regular medical check-ups, preventive healthcare and early screening for non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and cancer. He noted that early diagnosis significantly improves treatment outcomes and quality of life, urging veterans to take advantage of the comprehensive healthcare package offered by DEFMIS, including outpatient and inpatient care, specialist consultations, diagnostic services, pharmacy benefits and chronic disease management.
Brigadier Hussein further highlighted that the Scheme has enhanced optical and dental benefits and partnered with the Kenya Society for Deaf Children to facilitate access to affordable hearing aids for eligible beneficiaries, reaffirming DEFMIS’ commitment to responsive and inclusive healthcare.
During the medical outreach, participants benefited from a comprehensive range of services, including general medical consultations and treatment, screening for diabetes, hypertension and various cancers, mental health education and counselling, health talks on disease prevention and referrals to accredited healthcare providers.
Speaking during the event, the Managing Director of the Defence Forces Old Comrades Association (DEFOCA), Brigadier Alphonce Ndah, described the medical camp as a significant milestone in the Ministry of Defence’s efforts to improve healthcare access for military veterans and their dependants. He noted that beneficiaries, continue to receive medical services through the programme and encouraged veterans to register with available support programmes while embracing regular medical check ups to promote healthy and dignified living.
