Personnel from the Kenya Defence Forces’ Directorate of Military Intelligence (DMI) recently held their annual sports tournament. This year, the series of sporting events took place at the National Military Command Centre (NMCC) in Nairobi. Major General Mohammed Burje, the Director of Military Intelligence, officially launched the tourney.
The annual tournament aims to foster cohesion, solidarity, and harmony among soldiers from various DMI departments, including the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) DMI and Military Intelligence Corps (MIC).
Participation in sporting activities helped break down barriers and made formal ranks secondary to the team objective. Each team worked hard to excel and outmanoeuvre its opponents on the field and track. Beyond just being a day of fun outside the office, the tournament provided an opportunity to identify talent and competitive spirit within the Unit for future competitions. It also served as a continuation of regular fitness exercises, which included a 3-mile run, volleyball, and football activities. The day would not have been complete without the famous tug of war.
At the conclusion of the tourney, which was fiercely contested for the top podium positions, MIC secured first place, followed by DHQ DMI in second, and DIA in third. In individual categories, MIC excelled in athletics and volleyball, while DHQ DMI claimed first place in football. These results were mirrored in the track events, where MIC won both gold and bronze medals, and DHQ DMI took home the silver.
Outstanding performances by individual stars during the tournament were duly acknowledged and celebrated. Awards were given for the best overall male and female players among the Service members, and the best overall officer was also recognised.
While presenting the overall winners’ trophy to MIC, Major General Burje congratulated all participants for their presence and the enthusiasm they brought to the games. He particularly praised the display of sportsmanship during the competitions. Additionally, he urged everyone to remain vigilant in their responsibilities as DMI personnel, challenging them to perform their duties diligently while upholding high standards of performance.
“We need to challenge ourselves to perform optimally in our tasks. Let us maintain commitment to duty and mentor each other to grow,” he said.
The tournament came to a close with the winners celebrating their spoils, while the rest remained hopeful for a better performance in the next event.
