Regular leadership engagements are vital in improving healthcare delivery within the military. They provide an opportunity to evaluate operational capacity, address emerging challenges, engage medical personnel and strengthen institutional support for military healthcare facilities. Such visits also encourage collaboration, facilitate the exchange of best practices and ensure medical establishments continue to meet the evolving healthcare needs of military personnel and their dependants.
Recognising this commitment, the Director of Medical Services (DMS), Major General (Dr) Francis Kuria, on 03 August 2026, visited the Kenya Navy to gain first-hand insight into the operations of The Kenya Navy Hospital (TKNH), review ongoing developments and reaffirm the directorate’s commitment to enhancing quality healthcare services across the Service.
Upon his arrival, Major General (Dr) Kuria paid a courtesy call on the Commander Kenya Navy, Major General Paul Otieno, before proceeding to The Kenya Navy Hospital for the scheduled visit. Discussions during the meeting focused on the importance of strengthening institutional support for TKNH, with particular emphasis on ongoing and planned facility improvements aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery, improving patient care and supporting the operational readiness of Kenya Navy medical services.
Chief of Naval Medical Services (CNMS), Brigadier (Dr) Justino Muinde, briefed the DMS on TKNH’s capabilities, achievements, ongoing projects and future plans. The briefing also highlighted TKNH’s critical role in providing quality healthcare services to Kenya Defence Forces personnel and their families.
During the visit, Major General (Dr) Kuria engaged with the hospital leadership and staff, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the facility’s operations, ongoing projects and the challenges affecting service delivery. The engagement also provided an opportunity to explore measures that will further strengthen support for the hospital.
The DMS toured various departments where he interacted with healthcare personnel and patients. He wished patients a speedy recovery and commended the medical staff for their professionalism, dedication and commitment to delivering quality patient care.
Addressing the hospital staff, Major General (Dr) Kuria encouraged them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism by handling patients with compassion, maintaining a positive attitude and remaining committed to excellence in service delivery. He also reaffirmed the directorate’s continued support for TKNH in advancing efficient, patient-centred healthcare for the KDF community.
The visit reflected the Kenya Defence Forces’ ongoing investment in strengthening military healthcare infrastructure and services. Through sustained leadership engagement and institutional support, the KDF aims to improve the welfare of its personnel and their families while enhancing operational effectiveness through the delivery of quality, patient-oriented healthcare.
