ENHANCING MARITIME SECURITY THROUGH STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP AND TRAINING

The Kenya Navy has continued to strengthen its maritime security capabilities through specialized training on the Indian Ocean Regional Information Sharing (IORIS) platform, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing maritime domain awareness, information sharing and coordinated responses to security threats within the Western Indian Ocean region.

The training, facilitated by EU CRIMARIO, equipped Kenya Navy officers with practical knowledge on the operation of the IORIS platform, a secure web-based information sharing and coordination system designed to improve collaboration among maritime agencies during routine operations and maritime incidents.

Throughout the programme, participants gained hands-on experience in utilizing the platform to exchange real-time operational information, coordinate responses, monitor maritime activities and enhance communication between national and regional maritime stakeholders. The training also demonstrated how technology can strengthen interoperability and support timely decision-making in the maritime domain.

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to build institutional capacity and promote a collaborative approach to addressing emerging maritime security challenges, including piracy, illicit trafficking, illegal fishing, marine pollution and other transnational maritime crimes. By leveraging digital information-sharing tools, maritime agencies are better positioned to safeguard regional waters and maritime interests.

The training further highlighted the importance of international partnerships in advancing maritime security through knowledge exchange, technical support and capacity building. Such collaborations continue to enhance the professionalism and operational readiness of maritime personnel while fostering greater regional cooperation.
