A transformative shift in access to higher education is taking shape in Baringo County following the groundbreaking of Kabarnet University College in Kabarnet town. The milestone event, presided over by Defence Cabinet Secretary Hon. Soipan Tuya, signals a bold step toward decentralizing university education and unlocking new opportunities for youth in the region.
The new institution, a constituent college of Moi University, is set to be developed in phases under the supervision of the Ministry of Defence through the Kenya Defence Forces. The initial phase will prioritize core academic infrastructure, including lecture halls, a modern library, an auditorium, and administrative facilities. Subsequent phases will expand the institution’s capacity with additional support infrastructure to sustain long-term growth.
The project reflects a broader national agenda to bridge regional disparities in access to quality higher education. Once complete, Kabarnet University College is expected to serve students from Baringo and neighbouring counties, offering academic and professional pathways closer to home while reducing the need for relocation to distant urban centres.
Speaking during the ceremony, Hon. Tuya emphasized education as a cornerstone of national transformation, noting that the institution embodies the government’s commitment to inclusive development. She described the university as a beacon of opportunity that will empower young people with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in an increasingly competitive global landscape.
Beyond academics, the university is poised to catalyze socio-economic growth within the region. The construction and operational phases are expected to generate employment, stimulate local enterprise, and strengthen community livelihoods—positioning Kabarnet as an emerging hub for education and innovation.
Local leadership, led by Benjamin Cheboi, highlighted the importance of sustained collaboration between national and county governments in delivering impactful development projects. The ceremony also brought together key stakeholders, including Hannah Cheptumo, Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru, and Higher Education Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala. Academic leadership from Moi University, led by Acting Vice Chancellor Kiplagat Kotut, was also present.
In a show of integrated development planning, the delegation further inspected the ongoing construction of Kabarnet Stadium—another flagship project under the Ministry of Defence—underscoring the government’s multi-sectoral approach to regional transformation.
As groundwork begins, Kabarnet University College stands not just as an infrastructure project, but as a symbol of progress—anchoring education, economic growth, and hope for future generations in Baringo County.
