INDIAN SHIPS’ PORT CALL IN MOMBASA SHOWCASES GROWING NAVAL PARTNERSHIP

Kenya Navy hosted four vessels from India’s First Training Squadron during their four-day port call in Mombasa. The visiting ships-Indian Navy Ship (INS) TIR, INS SHARDUL, INS SUJATA and Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) SARATHI were part of the Indian Navy’s Overseas Deployment for Autumn Term 2025.

As part of the visit, the Indian delegation led by the Acting High Commissioner to Kenya, Mr. Sushil Prasad and Defence Attaché, Captain Velagada Shirdikant, paid a courtesy call on the Commander Kenya Navy, Major General Paul Otieno at Kenya Navy Headquarters. Discussions centered on strengthening maritime security cooperation and reaffirming the longstanding naval partnership between the two navies.

A deck reception hosted onboard INS SHARDUL on 26 September 2025 was attended by prominent guests, including Mombasa Governor Hon. Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir, Taita Taveta Governor Hon. Andrew Mwadime, Commander Kenya Navy and Kenya Navy Senior Officers.

In support of cultural diplomacy and community engagement, Kenya Navy and Indian Navy bands held a joint public performance at Mama Ngina Waterfront, coinciding with World Tourism Day celebrations. Further, a joint yoga session onboard ICGS Sarathi promoted health, wellness and camaraderie amongst Indian ships’ crew members and Kenya Navy officers.

The port visit aimed to provide practical sea training for Indian naval cadets while strengthening cultural and naval ties between India and Kenya, particularly in ensuring maritime security within the Western Indian Ocean.
