The Kenya Army has reaffirmed its commitment to building a modern, agile, and technologically advanced force, positioning innovation as a central pillar of operational success in an increasingly complex security landscape.
As global militaries continue to prioritise technological superiority and intellectual agility, the Kenya Army is advancing a deliberate strategy anchored in research, innovation, and the integration of emerging technologies. This approach aims to enhance operational readiness, efficiency, sustainability, and responsiveness to evolving threats.
This strategic focus took centre stage during the inaugural Science, Technology, Innovation and Research (STIR) Conference held from 28 to 30 April 2026 at Kahawa Garrison. Convened under the theme “Innovation for Defence: Empowering Kenya Army into the Future,” the three-day forum brought together military personnel, researchers, and innovators to showcase cutting-edge ideas and technologies designed to strengthen mission effectiveness.
Opening the conference, General Officer Commanding Western Command, Jeff Nyagah, underscored the growing importance of adaptability and technological advancement in modern warfare. He highlighted the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in reshaping military planning, execution, and sustainment.
“Artificial Intelligence is fundamentally reshaping how we plan, execute and sustain military operations. Innovation is no longer optional but a strategic necessity,” he stated, urging personnel to embrace continuous learning and technological integration.
The conference was officially closed by Commander Kenya Army, Lieutenant General David Ketter, who commended participants for embracing innovation as a force multiplier in modern warfare. He reiterated the Army’s commitment to investing in research and emerging technologies to enhance operational capability.
“Innovation remains a key force multiplier in modern warfare. We will continue investing in research and innovative solutions that empower our troops and strengthen our ability to respond effectively to evolving security threats,” said Lt Gen Ketter.
Participants drawn from across the Kenya Defence Forces – including Formation Commanders, Chief of Branches, senior officers, and innovators – reflected a unified institutional drive toward modernisation and capability development.
A key highlight of the conference was a series of exhibitions and demonstrations showcasing locally developed innovations.
The successful conclusion of the inaugural STIR Conference marks a significant milestone in the Kenya Army’s transformation into a technology-driven, future-ready force. It reinforced the critical role of science, research, and innovation in strengthening operational effectiveness and ensuring preparedness against both current and emerging security challenges.
