The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel from the Kenya Navy Headquarters and Mariakani Garrison on Friday, 21 November 2025, joined Commonwealth member states in marking the 8th Remembrance Service at the Voi Commonwealth War Cemetery, Joint India-Africa Commemorative Pillar and Taita War Cemetery in Taita-Taveta County.
The solemn event was jointly graced by Australian High Commissioner to Kenya Ms. Jenny Da Rin and India High Commissioner to Kenya Dr. Adarsh Swaika to honour the gallant men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice during the World War 1.
The event focused on remembering African soldiers who fought and died in around the modern day Taita-Taveta County during the East African Campaign, British East Africa against German East Africa which ended 2 weeks after the Armistice in Europe following the surrender of Germany. This marked it as the longest single campaign of World War 1.
In her remarks, Ms. Jenny expressed gratitude to all those who attended the ceremony to pay tribute to the fallen heroes and heroines, noting that their courage and sacrifice continue to inspire generations.
The ceremony culminated in the laying of wreaths by representatives of Commonwealth states, senior KDF officers, retired service members, and World War veterans. A two-minute silence was observed in honour of those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Also present at the commemoration were foreign dignitaries, representatives of various Commonwealth nations, Defence Attachèès of US, UK, Australia, India, Canada, Senior KDF officers, and serving members of the Defence Forces and Taita Taveta Community.
