Defence Cabinet Secretary Hon Soipan Tuya has today announced Kenya’s expanded support for United Nations (UN) peacekeeping operations at the 2025 UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Conference in Berlin, Germany.
Speaking at the planery pledging session on the last day of the two-day conference, Hon Tuya reaffirmed Kenya’s strong commitment to UN peace operations.
“To reaffirm our strong commitment to UN peace operations, Kenya undertakes to elevate its existing pledges within the Peacekeeping Capability Readiness System (PCRS). Moreover, I am pleased to announce the following additional pledges: a heavy transport company; an armed helicopter unit; and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) Units including Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS),” Hon Tuya said.
Kenya also pledged: Deployment of one Mobile Training Team to support the UN Mine Action Service IED Threat Mitigation Advisory Team from September 2025;
Counter-IED and Weapons and Ammunition Management training; and hosting or providing trainers for Weapons and Ammunition Management training as well as continued support through the Triangular Partnership Programme for Counter-IED and EOD capacity building.
At the same time, Hon Tuya reiterated Kenya’s sustained call for a comprehensive review of UN peace operations to make them more responsive, effective and efficient.
“Over time, the peacekeeping environment has continued to shift, posing new challenges to peacekeepers.
“Direct attack on peacekeepers and emerging threats such as terrorism, criminal gangs, transnational organized crimes as well as hybrid threats continue to challenge the traditional methods of peacekeeping.
“Consequently, a comprehensive review of UN peace operations to address such new challenges is inevitably urgent,” Hon Tuya said.
She added that the evolving global security threats and complex operational environments calls for collective responsibility by all stakeholders to ensure UN peace operations are responsive, fit-for purpose, credible and adaptable to current and future realities.
The Cabinet Secretary said the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti led by Kenya was an example of the new peacekeeping paradigm that’s tailored, agile, and regionally supported.
“We are proud to contribute to this groundbreaking initiative (MSS). However, to ensure its long-term success, we appeal to the international community for greater collaboration, to address the operational needs of the MSS,” CS Tuya urged.
She thanked the German Government for supporting the construction of a Counter-IED Complex at the International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC) in Nairobi as well as the European Union for continued assistance.
“We acknowledge the European Union for its substantial in-kind support towards capability enhancement,” Hon Tuya concluded.
The Cabinet Secretary was accompanied by Kenya’s Ambassador to Germany H.E Stella Mokaya Orina and Kenya Defence Forces’ Chief of Operations Brigadier Edward Rugendo.
