KENYA RED CROSS EVALUATES RAPID RESPONSE UNIT READINESS

On 31 March 2026, the Kenya Red Cross Society, led by the Director of the Kenya Red Cross Training Institute, Ms Monica Orero, conducted an evaluation of a Rapid Response Unit (RRU) to assess its operational readiness, technical capacity, and compliance with national emergency response standards.

The exercise supports the Kenya Defence Forces’ secondary mandate of aiding civil authorities in disaster preparedness and response.

The evaluation focused on key areas including personnel training, equipment standards, command structures, and response capabilities such as emergency medical services, search and rescue, and incident management. Leaders from Moi Air Base Aviation Hospital noted that the RRU’s effectiveness had been demonstrated during recent flood response operations in Nairobi, citing timely deployment and strong multi-agency coordination as critical in saving lives.

The exercise also reviewed licensing and legal requirements, emphasizing alignment with national disaster management frameworks and enhanced collaboration with county governments and multi-agency teams.

Overall, the evaluation reaffirmed that well-trained personnel, functional equipment, and clear command structures are essential for rapid, coordinated, and effective emergency response.
