KENYAN TROOPS IN DRC JOIN FELLOW MONUSCO PEACEKEEPERS IN MARKING INTERNATIONAL DAY OF UN PEACEKEEPERS

Kenya’s Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF), deployed under the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), joined fellow peacekeepers in commemorating the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers at the Tanzanian Battalion (TANZBATT) Camp in Mavivi, North Kivu.

The event brought together contingents and officials from various countries serving under MONUSCO to reflect on the sacrifices, achievements, and unwavering commitment of peacekeepers in promoting peace and stability in the DRC and around the world. The day’s theme, “Fit for the Future, Building Better Together,” stood out throughout the speeches and activities during the ceremony.

Led by the Acting Head of Office (Ag HoSO) at the MONUSCO sub-office in Beni, Mr. Adam Salami Obatoki, the celebrations featured a military parade and the laying of wreaths in honor of peacekeepers who have paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.

KENQRF troops, known for their professionalism and rapid response capabilities, actively participated in the parade and ceremonial activities, showcasing Kenya’s ongoing commitment to global peace efforts.

Mr. Obatoki delivered a message from UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in which he pointed out that with unwavering courage, United Nations peacekeepers step into danger — to help protect those who need protection, preserve peace, and restore hope in some of the world’s most challenging contexts.

“More than 4,400 peacekeepers have died in service — 57 last year alone. We will never forget them — and we will carry their work forward.

The focus of this year’s International Day of Peacekeepers is on ‘the future of peacekeeping.’

Today, peacekeepers face increasingly complex situations in an increasingly complex world: growing polarization and division around the globe, operations made even more dangerous by a multiplicity of threats such as terrorism, the targeting of peacekeepers through deadly misinformation, and challenges that transcend borders — from the climate crisis to transnational crime,” read the message.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, KENQRF Contingent Commander Lieutenant Colonel Simon Seda commended the collaborative efforts between MONUSCO contingents and emphasized the importance of unity in achieving sustainable peace in the region.

“We stand shoulder to shoulder with our brothers and sisters in arms from across the globe. Peace is not built by one nation alone, but by a collective will to secure a better future for all,” he said.

Observed annually on May 29, the International Day of UN Peacekeepers honors the more than one million men and women who have served under the UN flag since 1948.

As such, KENQRF’s involvement in MONUSCO continues to play a critical role in protecting civilians, contributing to Security Sector Reform as well as playing an active role in Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration of belligerents that opt to ground arms and choose peace.
