KENYAN TROOPS TAKE PART IN HEIGHTENED OPERATIONS TO PROTECT CIVILIANS IN ITURI PROVINCE, DRC

Kenyan troops serving under the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) have enhanced activities aimed at protection of civilians in Ituri Province, eastern DRC.

Working hand in hand with troops drawn from the Indonesia Rapid Deployment Battalion and the Battalion of the Republic of South Africa (RSABATT) the peacekeepers have intensified joint area domination patrols in the areas of Komanda, Ngeleza, Bandiamosi, Bamande and Irumu Villages among other villages in the area of operation.

Coming in the wake of recent increase of attacks on the citizenry by illegal armed groups in the region, the objective of these joint operations which also brings on board troops from the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) is to disrupt and neutralize negative forces within Ituri territory.

The KENQRF Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Simon Seda, has lauded the ongoing operation as a success.

“Since the operation began a few weeks ago, the security situation in the area has significantly improved. Feedback from local elders, women, and youth indicates that the community feels safer and is now able to sleep peacefully, thanks to the ongoing patrols that we jointly conduct round the clock,” he added.

He further pointed out the troops are engaged in key leadership engagement and assorted Civil

Military Cooperation activities aimed at winning the hearts and minds in pursuit of peace.

Community members have expressed willingness to collaborate with the troops by sharing any information related to militia movements, emphasizing their commitment to restoring lasting peace in the region.

Notably, the improved security environment now allows children to return to school, signalling a major step forward in the normalization of daily life.
