MACHAKOS UNIVERSITY VISITS KENYA NAVY

Fourth-year students from Machakos University, Department of Social Sciences recently visited Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe in Mombasa County for an educational tour.

The visit aimed to familiarise the students with the Navy’s maritime facilities and operations, offering a rare opportunity to gain practical exposure to maritime security while exploring potential career paths within the service.

Their tour began at the Full Mission Bridge Simulator (FMBS) within Kenya Naval Training College (KNTC). The system provided a realistic glimpse into the complexities of ship navigation and handling within a safe, simulated setting.

The students also toured the Damage Control Unit (DCU) and Firefighting facility at KNTC, gaining critical insights into how naval personnel are trained to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies such as onboard fires and flooding. They also received a presentation on Kenya Navy’s response to maritime pollution and maritime security threats.

The tour extended to the Kenya Navy Fleet (KNF), where the students boarded Kenya Navy Ship (KNS) JASIRI and KNS SHUPAVU secured alongside Mkunguni Jetty. Onboard, they interacted with naval personnel, explored the vessels and learnt about advanced navigation and communication systems. The experience offered an understanding of the ships’ strategic roles in executing missions at sea.

While at KNTC, the students also visited the tree nursery, an initiative that supports Kenya Navy environmental conservation efforts.

More than just an academic excursion, the visit broadened the students’ perspective on maritime security. It also served as a source of inspiration, encouraging many to consider careers in maritime operations and related fields. The tour stood out as a memorable and impactful experience, seamlessly connecting theoretical learning with practical maritime operations.
