MARITIME SECURITY THROUGH STRATEGIC DEFENCE PARTNERSHIPS

Kenya and Egypt are deepening their strategic maritime partnership through enhanced defence cooperation aimed at advancing naval capability, industrial innovation and professional military development. The growing collaboration reflects a shared commitment to safeguarding regional maritime interests while promoting self-reliance and sustainable security solutions.

In a significant demonstration of defence diplomacy, the Commander Kenya Navy, Major General Paul Otieno, conducted an official visit to Egypt from 4 to 6 May 2026, where he engaged senior Egyptian naval leadership in discussions focused on expanding bilateral cooperation across key areas of maritime security and naval modernization.

During bilateral talks held at the Egyptian Navy Headquarters, Major General Otieno met the Commander of the Egyptian Navy, Vice Admiral Mahmoud Adel Fawzy. The discussions centred on strengthening existing defence relations and exploring new opportunities for collaboration in shipbuilding, military manufacturing and professional military training. The engagement underscored the importance of strategic partnerships in enhancing naval readiness and regional maritime stability.

A major highlight of the visit was the engagement at the Alexandria Shipyard Company, where Major General Otieno held discussions with Rear Admiral Hossam Kotb on advancing cooperation between Kenya Shipyards Limited (KSL) and the Alexandria Shipyard. The talks focused on joint production initiatives, technology transfer and workforce development, all geared towards strengthening indigenous shipbuilding capacity and enhancing industrial self-sufficiency within the maritime sector.

Egypt also showcased its locally developed inflatable boat production capabilities, demonstrating the country’s growing expertise in indigenous defence manufacturing and presenting opportunities for future localized production partnerships with Kenya.

The visit further expanded into specialized areas of naval support and training. At the Egyptian Navy Hospital and Diving Medicine Centre, Major General Otieno held discussions with Rear Admiral Hisham El Tobgy on potential collaboration in specialized medical training, diving operations and equipment support, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive capability development within modern naval operations.

Additionally, the Commander Kenya Navy toured the Egypt Naval Academy, where he observed advanced training infrastructure dedicated to developing future naval leaders. The visit to the Special Forces Brigade provided further insight into Egypt’s elite operational capabilities, advanced equipment and specialized training programmes, opening avenues for enhanced cooperation in special operations training and maritime security operations.

The engagements collectively reaffirmed the strong defence ties between Kenya and Egypt and highlighted the critical role of international military partnerships in promoting innovation, professional excellence and sustainable maritime security.

As both nations continue to strengthen cooperation, the partnership stands as a strategic pillar for enhancing naval capabilities, fostering industrial growth and supporting collective security efforts across the region.
