MASTERING THE DEPTHS FOR MARITIME READINESS

Operational readiness in the maritime domain depends not only on surface capabilities but also on specialised underwater skills that enable personnel to operate safely and effectively beneath the surface. Developing these capabilities strengthens the Kenya Navy’s capacity to respond to underwater threats and support a wide range of maritime operations.

On 2 October 2026, the Kenya Navy graduated trainees of the Diving Instructor Course and Basic Diver Course, marking the successful completion of specialised training designed to enhance the service’s underwater capabilities.

The graduation ceremony was presided over by Colonel Robert Birech, who congratulated the graduates for successfully completing the demanding courses. He underscored the importance of specialised diving skills in enhancing safety, operational effectiveness and readiness in maritime operations.

During the ceremony, Colonel Birech presented the graduates with diving badges and certificates of completion, formally recognising their qualification in their respective areas of training.

The courses equipped the trainees with essential knowledge and practical skills in underwater procedures, diving safety, equipment handling and other competencies required for effective diving operations. The training also emphasised discipline, teamwork and strict adherence to established safety procedures, all of which are critical to maintaining safety and effectiveness in the demanding underwater environment.

The graduation ceremony marked an important milestone in the professional development of the trainees while reaffirming the Kenya Navy’s commitment to building a highly skilled and specialised workforce. Through such training, the service continues to strengthen its capacity to support maritime operations and safeguard Kenya’s maritime interests.
