MONUSCO FORCE COMMANDER COMMENDS KENYAN PEACEKEEPERS FOR IMPACT IN MAMBASA

Protecting civilians in complex conflict environments demands more than military presence. It requires decisive operations against armed groups, sustained engagement with communities, support to local security structures and the protection of essential services that enable populations to rebuild their lives.

The Commander of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), Lieutenant General Ulisses De Mesquita Gomes, on recently visited the Kenya 5th Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF 5) in Mambasa, Ituri Province, where he commended the contingent for its contribution to civilian protection and stability.

The visit came as KENQRF 5 concluded approximately two months of Static Combat Deployment (SCD) in Mambasa, during which the contingent conducted targeted offensive operations against the belligerents, supported humanitarian initiatives, mentored local security forces and contributed to Ebola prevention efforts.

Operationally, KENQRF 5 maintained pressure on rebel elements by pursuing them into their hideouts and denying the armed group freedom of movement and action. The operations degraded armed groups’ ability to threaten local communities and helped create a more secure environment for residents to progressively resume socio-economic activities.

The contingent complemented its combat operations with community-focused initiatives aimed at strengthening trust and supporting local resilience. Through medical camps and support to youth initiatives, the Kenyan peacekeepers addressed immediate humanitarian needs while maintaining close engagement with communities within their area of operation.

KENQRF 5 also mentored local security forces, contributing to capacity building and strengthening their ability to support security and stability beyond the contingent’s deployment. The approach reinforced the importance of working alongside local actors in developing sustainable responses to security challenges.

Beyond conventional security operations, the Kenyan peacekeepers supported ongoing efforts to contain Ebola Virus Disease. The troops conducted community sensitisation, implemented preventive measures and contributed to the protection of treatment centres, helping safeguard critical health services amid persistent security challenges.

The Force Commander’s visit provided an opportunity to recognise the professionalism, discipline and operational effectiveness demonstrated by the Kenyan contingent throughout its deployment in Mambasa.

By integrating offensive operations with humanitarian engagement, local capacity building and public health protection, KENQRF 5 demonstrated the multidimensional nature of contemporary peacekeeping and the centrality of civilian protection to mandate implementation.

As the contingent concludes its deployment in Mambasa, its contribution has strengthened security, supported local communities and reinforced MONUSCO’s wider efforts to protect civilians and restore stability in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The recognition by the MONUSCO Force Commander further underscores the contribution of Kenyan peacekeepers to international peace and security and the Kenya Defence Forces’ continued role in supporting United Nations peace operations in complex and demanding environments.
