NRH KAHAWA GARRISON COMMEMORATES WORLD KIDNEY DAY

On 12 March 2026, activities marking World Kidney Day were held at Kahawa Garrison, bringing together healthcare personnel and members of the military community in a campaign to promote kidney health and disease prevention.

The event aimed to raise awareness on the importance of early detection, prevention and proper management of kidney-related illnesses among service members, their families and civilian staff within the garrison.

Speaking during the event, the Commandant Nairobi Regional Hospital (NRH), Col Alex Nteere, emphasized this year’s theme, “Kidney Health for All: Caring for People, Protecting the Planet.” He highlighted the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyles, undertaking regular medical check-ups and ensuring adequate hydration as key measures in preventing kidney disease. He further encouraged participants to take advantage of the medical outreach and educational sessions organized as part of the day’s activities.

During the exercise, participants received free medical screening, including blood pressure checks, blood sugar tests and kidney function assessments. The initiative sought to encourage early diagnosis and management of kidney conditions such as Chronic Kidney Disease.

Medical officers from NRH also conducted sensitization sessions on risk factors associated with kidney disease, including high blood pressure, diabetes and unhealthy dietary habits. Participants were urged to adopt healthy living practices to safeguard their kidney health.

The commemoration of World Kidney Day at Kahawa Garrison underscores the commitment of the Kenya Defence Forces Medical Corps to promoting preventive healthcare and enhancing the wellbeing of KDF personnel and their families.

Present during the event were the Camp Commandant, Col Valentine Kilungya; Senior Medical Officer, Col Dr Angela Nderi; and Chief Nursing Officer, Col Hellen Kimotho, among other senior officers from Nairobi Regional Hospital.
