In a significant and nostalgic visit, the first Commandant of the Defence Staff College (DSC), now renamed Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC), General (Rtd) Daudi Tonje recently returned to the institution. Accompanied by several members of his first Directing Staff and a group of pioneer students from the inaugural course of 01-84/85, the visit marked an important moment in the college’s history as it approaches its 40th anniversary celebration in June 2025.
Upon arrival at JCSC Karen, General (Rtd) Tonje and his delegation were warmly received by the current Commandant, Major General Kinuthia, who expressed his deep appreciation for the legacy left by the pioneers.
The visit served not only as a reunion but also as an opportunity for the pioneer leaders and students to reflect on the evolution of the college over the past four decades. They shared stories of their experiences during the first course, highlighting the unique challenges they faced and the camaraderie that developed among them.
General (Rtd) Tonje took the opportunity to engage with current students and JCSC leadership, emphasizing the importance of adaptability and continuous learning in military.
As preparations for the 40th anniversary celebration get underway, the college has planned a series of events and activities to honor its rich history and the contributions of its alumni. The celebration is expected to draw distinguished guests, including military leaders, former students, and government officials, all coming together to commemorate the college’s impact on military education and leadership development in Kenya and beyond.
The visit of General (Rtd) Tonje and his delegation is a reminder of the strong foundations upon which JCSC stands and a celebration of the enduring spirit of excellence that has guided it for 40 remarkable years.
As the college looks to the future, it remains committed to nurturing the next generation of military leaders equipped to face the challenges of modern warfare and security in an ever-evolving global landscape.
During the visit, General (Rtd) Tonje was accompanied by the first Directing Staff and pioneer students of Course 01-84/85 namely; Lieutenant General (Rtd) Humphrey Njoroge, Colonel (Rtd) Joseph Nguru, Colonel (Rtd) Ali Sayed, Colonel (Rtd) Peter Gichuhi, Colonel (Rtd) Philip Ngere and Colonel (Rtd) Chege Muthumbi.
