READINESS BEYOND THE BATTLEFIELD

READINESS BEYOND THE BATTLEFIELD

Medical preparedness is vital to operational effectiveness, enabling military personnel to respond quickly and competently to emergencies in training and operation environments. Through continuous training and professional development, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) equips its personnel with lifesaving skills that enhance readiness, resilience and safety.

As part of these efforts, the Commandant Kenya Military Academy (KMA), Major General Joel Muriungi Arimi, today officially launched a four-day Basic Life Support (BLS) training programme for academy staff at KMA, Lanet.

The training, facilitated by instructors from the Defence College of Health Sciences (DCHS), is aimed at strengthening the emergency medical response capabilities of personnel across the Academy.

Speaking during the launch, Major General Arimi emphasised that the ability to respond effectively during medical emergencies is a critical component of military professionalism and operational readiness. He noted that military personnel operate in demanding environments where immediate lifesaving interventions can make the difference between life and death.

The course equips participants with internationally recognized lifesaving skills, including early recognition of cardiac arrest, prompt activation of emergency response systems, administration of high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), management of choking incidents, and coordinated team response during medical emergencies. It also covers emergency care for adults, children and infants, reinforcing the importance of teamwork and rapid intervention in improving survival outcomes.

The training further underscores the importance of the Chain of Survival, which emphasizes early recognition of emergencies, immediate high-quality CPR, early defibrillation, advanced resuscitation and post-cardiac arrest care as essential steps in saving lives.

The initiative forms part of the Academy’s commitment to developing a highly prepared workforce capable of responding confidently to medical emergencies during training, operations and routine activities.
