SECURITY AND CARE: KENYAN PEACEKEEPERS RESTORE HOPE IN MANTUMBI

Kenyan peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are demonstrating how security operations can directly translate into improved human welfare in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Following sustained patrols that have successfully deterred armed groups across Mbau, Oicha, Mamove and Mantumbi, the Kenya Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF 5) established a medical camp at Pasala Level II Hospital—bridging a critical healthcare gap in a conflict-affected region.

The facility, which serves hundreds of households, has long struggled with severe challenges, including attacks on medical personnel, disruption of supply chains, and limited access due to poor infrastructure. These constraints have disproportionately affected women and children, with preventable diseases such as malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoea remaining widespread.

During the outreach, KENQRF medics provided treatment to over 100 patients while also delivering health education on mental resilience in conflict environments, substance abuse, and reproductive health. The intervention not only addressed immediate medical needs but also empowered the community with knowledge vital for long-term wellbeing.

The initiative reflects MONUSCO’s broader mandate of civilian protection, illustrating that sustainable peace extends beyond security enforcement. By integrating humanitarian action with stability operations, Kenyan peacekeepers are helping communities reclaim normalcy—where safety, health, and dignity reinforce each other as foundations of lasting peace.
