The Kenya Air Force (KAF) continues to harness sport as a powerful tool for strengthening operational readiness, resilience, and unity among its personnel, as demonstrated during the Kenya Air Force Inter-Bases Track and Field Championship held at Nyayo Stadium.
The two-day championship, conducted from 4 to 5 May 2026, brought together athletes from Moi Air Base (MAB), Laikipia Air Base (LAB), Wajir Air Base (WAB), and Embakasi Air Base (EAB) in a spirited competition that showcased athletic excellence, teamwork, and military camaraderie.
Presiding over the event on Tuesday, 5 May 2026, the Deputy Commander Kenya Air Force, Brigadier Samuel Kipkorir, emphasized the central role of sports in cultivating a physically fit, mentally resilient, and mission-ready force capable of responding effectively to operational demands.
The championship featured a wide range of track and field disciplines designed to test endurance, speed, agility, and technical skill. Track events included the 100m, 200m, and 400m sprints, middle- and long-distance races such as the 800m, 1500m, and 5000m, as well as the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Field events included long jump, triple jump, high jump, shot put, discus throw, javelin, and hammer throw.
Laikipia Air Base emerged as the dominant force throughout the competition, delivering outstanding performances in both the men’s and women’s categories to secure the overall championship title. Moi Air Base followed closely in second position, while Wajir Air Base secured third place in both categories.
The championship also highlighted individual and unit excellence across specific disciplines. Moi Air Base excelled in the women’s 5000m and 3000m races, Wajir Air Base demonstrated strength in the men’s long jump, while Embakasi Air Base impressed with victory in the men’s 800m event.
Addressing participants during the closing ceremony, Brigadier Kipkorir noted that sports remain an essential component of military life because they reinforce discipline, teamwork, endurance, and fighting spirit among service personnel.
He observed that athletic competitions provide an important platform for building cohesion across formations while enhancing the physical and mental preparedness necessary for effective mission execution. He encouraged personnel to continue embracing sportsmanship and active participation in preparation for upcoming Kenya Defence Forces competitions.
Beyond competition, the championship reflected the Kenya Air Force’s broader commitment to holistic personnel development by integrating physical fitness and morale-building activities into military culture. Through such engagements, service members strengthen bonds of unity, sharpen competitive spirit, and foster the resilience required in demanding operational environments.
The Kenya Air Force Inter-Bases Championship therefore served not only as a sporting contest but also as a demonstration of the Service’s enduring focus on fitness, teamwork, and operational effectiveness — qualities that remain fundamental to mission success within the Kenya Defence Forces.
