SPORTS INFRASTRUCTURE DRIVING REGIONAL TRANSFORMATION IN TURKANA

The Government’s continued investment in sports infrastructure is emerging as a powerful catalyst for youth empowerment, social cohesion and regional development. In a major step toward transforming the sporting landscape in northern Kenya, the Ministry of Defence has advanced plans for the construction of the landmark Ekalees Sports Stadium in Lodwar, Turkana County.

The development follows a high-level consultative meeting held at the Defence Headquarters between the Defence Principal Secretary, Patrick Mariru, and the Governor of Turkana County, Jeremiah Lomurkai Napotikan. The meeting focused on modalities for implementing the proposed 10,000-seater Ekalees Sports Stadium, a flagship project pledged by the President and Commander-in-Chief, William Ruto.

Once completed, the stadium will become the first modern sports facility of its scale in Turkana County and is expected to serve as a regional hub for sporting activities and community events. The project is envisioned as a transformative initiative aimed at nurturing youth talent, promoting healthy lifestyles and strengthening unity and social integration within the region.

Designed to meet modern international standards, the stadium will feature an eight-lane running track, a championship-level football pitch, VIP lounges, terraces and other state-of-the-art sporting amenities. The facility is expected to provide athletes from the region with a platform to develop and showcase their talents while also attracting sporting events and economic opportunities to the county.

The project will be implemented through a collaborative framework involving the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Youth Affairs Creative Economy and Sports and the Turkana County Government. Under the arrangement, the Ministry of Defence will provide technical supervision to ensure adherence to quality standards and timely completion of the project.

Preliminary works for the stadium are scheduled to commence within the next two weeks, signaling the beginning of a major infrastructure undertaking expected to significantly enhance sports development and socio-economic growth in the region.

Senior officials from both the Ministry of Defence and the Turkana County Government also attended the consultative meeting, reaffirming their collective commitment to the successful implementation of the project. The initiative reflects the government’s broader agenda of leveraging sports as a tool for empowerment, inclusion and national development while expanding access to modern infrastructure across all regions of the country.
