SPORTS UNITING COMMUNITIES FOR LASTING PEACE

Sport continues to emerge as a powerful catalyst for reconciliation, bringing together communities, inspiring young people and creating opportunities for dialogue in regions recovering from insecurity. Across Kenya’s North Rift, preparations for the 3rd Operation Maliza Uhalifu (OMU) North Rift Sports for Peace Tournament are gathering momentum, with growing support from government institutions, development partners and community stakeholders who view the initiative as an important investment in sustainable peace and social cohesion.

A series of stakeholder engagements conducted between 9 and 17 July 2026 drew participation from county governments, national institutions, development partners, faith-based organizations and humanitarian agencies, all of whom expressed confidence in the progress made through the multi-agency security operations under Operation Maliza Uhalifu. Participants acknowledged that improved security has created an enabling environment for initiatives that strengthen community resilience and encourage peaceful coexistence.

Discussions focused on the role of sport as a unifying platform capable of bridging long-standing divisions while promoting youth empowerment, education, cultural exchange and economic opportunity. Stakeholders observed that structured sporting activities provide safe spaces where young people, elders, women and local leaders can interact, build trust and nurture relationships that help prevent the resurgence of conflict.

The engagements further emphasized that peacebuilding extends beyond security interventions and requires sustained community participation. Participants encouraged the tournament organizers to use the event as a platform for dialogue, mentorship and civic engagement, enabling communities to collectively champion reconciliation and shared development.

Preparations for the tournament have reached an advanced stage, with participating counties organizing team selections, community sensitization forums and complementary activities focusing on mentorship, talent development and conflict prevention. The competition will feature football, volleyball and athletics alongside cultural performances that celebrate the region’s rich diversity while reinforcing the values of unity, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.

The initiative has also attracted significant commitments from partner organizations, several of which pledged logistical, technical and medical support to enhance the tournament’s success. Stakeholders further encouraged organizers to transform the Sports for Peace initiative into a continuous, year-round peacebuilding programme capable of sustaining engagement with communities beyond the tournament period.

Scheduled to bring together 40 teams drawn from nine counties, the 3rd North Rift Sports for Peace Tournament demonstrates the growing confidence in sport as an effective instrument for strengthening social cohesion, empowering youth and supporting long-term stability. The initiative complements the broader objectives of Operation Maliza Uhalifu by fostering stronger community partnerships and reinforcing the foundations of lasting peace and development across the North Rift region.
