STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS DRIVING NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND SECURITY

The growing intersection between economic transformation, governance and national security has reinforced the importance of strategic partnerships in shaping resilient and prosperous nations. Recognizing this evolving reality, the National Defence College (NDC) continues to expose senior military and civilian leaders to diverse perspectives that strengthen strategic thinking and decision-making at the highest levels. National Defence College is a college of National Defence University-Kenya.

In line with this objective, participants of Course 28/2025–2026 at the National Defence College received a Lecture from Mr Paul Russo, the Chief Executive Officer of KCB Group. The engagement focused on the central role of the private sector in advancing national development, economic resilience and regional integration.

Addressing the participants, Mr Russo emphasized that sustained collaboration between government institutions and private industry remains essential in driving long-term economic growth and stability. He noted that in an increasingly interconnected global environment, strong public-private partnerships are indispensable in addressing emerging economic and security-related challenges while promoting sustainable national progress.

The lecture highlighted the growing relevance of economic diplomacy as a strategic tool for enhancing regional cooperation, expanding trade opportunities and attracting investment across borders. Drawing from extensive experience in the banking and financial sector, Mr Russo shared practical insights and real-world case studies demonstrating how strategic partnerships can strengthen competitiveness, foster innovation and accelerate sustainable development.

He further provided an overview of the prevailing economic landscape, outlining both opportunities and challenges facing nations and institutions today. He underscored the importance of adaptability, innovation and visionary leadership in navigating dynamic economic and geopolitical environments.

The engagement broadened participants’ understanding of the close relationship between economic development, diplomacy, governance and national security. It reinforced the importance of incorporating economic perspectives into strategic security discourse and policy formulation, particularly in an era where economic stability increasingly influences national and regional security outcomes.

Mr Russo was received by the Commandant of the National Defence College, Lieutenant General Juma Mwinyikai, together with senior faculty members, who welcomed him to the institution. The leadership of the College reaffirmed the importance of continued collaboration between national security institutions and the private sector in nurturing strategic leadership capable of addressing contemporary challenges.
