Defence diplomacy remains an important pillar in strengthening international security partnerships, enhancing military capabilities and building collective responses to increasingly complex security challenges. Kenya and India continue to deepen their longstanding relations through sustained engagement focused on professional military development, technology, information sharing and cooperation in areas of mutual strategic interest.
The Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri, hosted the High Commissioner of India to Kenya, His Excellency Dr Adarsh Swaika, at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi on 10 August 2026, for discussions aimed at advancing bilateral defence cooperation between the two countries.
The engagement provided an opportunity to review areas of mutual security interest and explore avenues for expanding military-to-military cooperation. Discussions focused on strengthening the operational capacity of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) through joint training, intelligence and information sharing, professional exchanges and the application of emerging technologies to contemporary security challenges.
Particular attention was given to the evolving threat environment and the importance of strengthening preparedness against transnational and asymmetric security threats. The two leaders discussed opportunities for enhanced cooperation in countering violent extremism and terrorism, while strengthening institutional capabilities to anticipate, prevent and respond effectively to emerging threats.
Maritime security also featured prominently in the discussions, recognising the strategic importance of secure sea lanes to regional stability, international trade and economic development. Enhanced cooperation in maritime domain awareness, capacity building and information sharing remains vital to addressing threats affecting the Western Indian Ocean and safeguarding critical maritime routes.
Kenya and India share longstanding historical ties that have developed into a broad partnership spanning defence, trade, technology, education and other areas of mutual interest. Continued defence engagement provides an important platform for exchanging expertise, strengthening interoperability and developing capabilities that contribute to national and regional security.
The engagement reaffirmed the value of strategic international partnerships in advancing KDF capability development and operational readiness while supporting Kenya’s wider contribution to peace and stability within the region and beyond.
