International defence partnerships play an important role in strengthening military capabilities, advancing professional development and enabling armed forces to respond effectively to an increasingly complex security environment. Through sustained engagement, knowledge exchange and capacity building, such partnerships also contribute to regional stability and reinforce cooperation among friendly nations.
Kenya and Japan continue to build on their longstanding diplomatic relations by expanding defence engagements and identifying opportunities for greater professional military cooperation. On 20 August 2026, Commander Kenya Air Force, Major General Bernard Waliaula, hosted Commander Nishioka Terumichi, Japan Defence Attaché to the Intelligence Division, Maritime Staff Office, during a courtesy call at Headquarters Kenya Air Force.
The engagement provided an opportunity to explore avenues for deepening defence cooperation between the two countries, with discussions focusing on capacity building, professional military education, training opportunities and the exchange of expertise.
Major General Waliaula highlighted the strategic importance of international military partnerships in enhancing operational effectiveness and strengthening institutional capacity. He noted that sustained professional engagements enable partner forces to share experiences, broaden their knowledge and develop capabilities necessary to address contemporary and emerging security challenges.
“We value our strong partnership with Japan. Such engagements are essential in strengthening professional ties, enhancing knowledge exchange and building the capabilities required to address contemporary security challenges,” said Major General Waliaula.
Commander Nishioka reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to advancing defence cooperation with Kenya and expressed optimism about continued collaboration in areas of mutual interest. The discussions highlighted the value of sustained military-to-military engagements in developing professional relationships and creating opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation.
The courtesy call further strengthened the growing defence relationship between Kenya and Japan and demonstrated the importance of sustained dialogue in translating diplomatic ties into practical military cooperation.
As the security environment continues to evolve, Kenya and Japan remain positioned to deepen their defence partnership through professional military education, capacity building, training and knowledge exchange. Such cooperation strengthens institutional resilience while contributing to broader efforts towards peace, security and stability.
