The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has taken a significant step in advancing veteran welfare and post-service reintegration with the inauguration of the Homa Bay County Military Veterans Chapter. The launch, held on 27 April 2026, signals a growing commitment to structured, community-based support systems designed to uplift retired service personnel across the country.
Officiated by the Directorate of Military Veterans and led by the Chairperson of the Military Veterans Advisory Committee, Major General (Rtd) Lukas Tumbo, the ceremony marked the formal establishment of the chapter under the patronage of Major General (Rtd) Maurice Oyugi. The initiative reflects a broader national strategy aimed at decentralizing veteran support through county-level structures that foster unity, shared responsibility, and collective progress among former service members.
Speaking during the event, Major General (Rtd) Tumbo emphasized that the creation of such chapters is central to building a cohesive veteran community. By bringing together retired personnel within their localities, the chapters provide a platform for peer support, knowledge exchange, and coordinated engagement in socio-economic activities that contribute to national development at the grassroots.
Major General (Rtd) Oyugi underscored the importance of sustaining support beyond active service, describing the chapter as a vital link between military life and civilian integration. He called on veterans to uphold the discipline, professionalism, and resilience cultivated during their years of service as they transition into new roles within society.
Director of Military Veterans, Brigadier Moses Leriari, highlighted the unique challenges faced by KDF personnel, including prolonged family separation and exposure to demanding operational conditions. He noted that the Homa Bay chapter—the first of its kind in the Nyanza and Western regions—represents a milestone in the ongoing effort to establish a nationwide network of veteran support systems.
The Homa Bay County Government, represented by Deputy Governor Hon. Danish Otieno Onyango, reaffirmed its commitment to the initiative, pledging support toward the establishment of a permanent office for the chapter. This collaboration between national and county leadership underscores the importance of multi-level partnerships in delivering sustainable veteran programs.
Established under the Military Veterans Act, 2022, the chapter provides a formal framework for coordinated assistance, ensuring that retired service members transition into civilian life with dignity, stability, and a renewed sense of purpose. As similar chapters continue to be rolled out across the country, the KDF’s veteran support agenda is steadily evolving into a comprehensive, inclusive model anchored on empowerment, recognition, and national service beyond uniform.
