Military sport continues to strengthen ties among armed forces across the world, bringing together service personnel through competition, discipline, and mutual respect. Beyond the pursuit of medals, it offers a platform where nations build friendships, share experiences, and showcase excellence through sport.
It is against this backdrop that Ulinzi Warriors, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) basketball team, will carry the country’s hopes to the 54th International Military Sports Council (CISM) World Military Basketball Championship scheduled for 27 June to 7 July 2026 in Bourges, France.
As the team prepares for the global assignment, attention is firmly fixed on delivering a strong performance against some of the world’s best military basketball sides. The championship presents an opportunity for the players to test themselves at the highest level while demonstrating the values of discipline, teamwork, and resilience that define military service.
The team’s journey officially began with a national flag handover ceremony held at the Ulinzi Sports Complex. The event was presided over by the Director of Oversight, Compliance and Accountability (DOCA), Major General M.I. Iddi, who challenged the players to pursue excellence and uphold the highest standards of conduct throughout the tournament.
Major General Iddi urged the team to remain focused on the mission ahead and serve as worthy ambassadors of both the Kenya Defence Forces and the nation. He also commended the players, coaches, and officials for the effort invested in preparation and reaffirmed the support of the KDF Sports Control Board in advancing military sport.
Ulinzi Warriors head to France carrying the confidence of a side accustomed to success. Guided by the team leadership, the team travels as nine-time Kenya Basketball Federation champions, drawing from years of competitive experience and a culture built on consistency and determination.
For the players, preparation has been centred on sharpening tactical awareness, strengthening team cohesion, and building the confidence required to compete on the international stage. Training sessions and friendly matches have formed part of a deliberate effort to ensure the squad arrives in France ready for the challenge ahead.
Team members expressed confidence in the team’s readiness, saying the players had benefited from a series of local and international friendly matches. They noted that the squad remains focused on its objective and is determined to return home with the championship title.
While the competition will be decided on the basketball court, the championship carries a wider purpose. Guided by the CISM motto, “Friendship Through Sport,” the tournament brings together military personnel from different nations, creating opportunities for interaction, cooperation, and professional exchange beyond competition.
As Ulinzi Warriors take to the court in Bourges, they will be competing not only for victory but also for national pride. Their participation reflects the growing stature of military sport within the Kenya Defence Forces and the belief that excellence in sport, like service excellence, is achieved through discipline, preparation, and teamwork.
With the Kenyan flag in hand and the nation’s expectations on their shoulders, the Ulinzi Warriors now turn their focus to France, determined to leave their mark on the championship and return home with honours.
